Intent

At Windsor, our PE curriculum is designed to offer all of our children a consistently solid foundation in sport and physical activity. PE is integral to the development, health and wellbeing of every child. Our broad and balanced curriculum supports our children to keep active and develop both their skills and their confidence in an enjoyable setting. We seek to support the children in building their character by focusing on social and emotional interactions with others through sport, as well as reflecting on our school values to build resilience, respect, independence and self-belief. We will use PE to promote the development of leadership skills across the school. We will ensure progression in the knowledge, understanding and skills required at each year group and offer a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities (including competitive), in order to enrich the lives of our children.

Implementation

Our children receive two hours of timetabled PE every week. This is taught by the subject leader, alongside the class teacher, which ensures the children have access to the support needed in order to help them thrive in PE lessons. Where appropriate within the curriculum, this provision is supplemented by specialist support.

In Years 1-6, the national curriculum objectives for the end of each Key Stage are covered comprehensively. Areas taught across the school year are fundamental/invasion games; gymnastics; dance; net and wall games; striking and fielding games; athletics and outdoor adventurous activities (the latter in years 4-6). This is in line with both national and School Improvement Liverpool guidance and matches up with other schools across the city. Every child in KS2 accesses swimming lessons throughout the school year.

In EYFS, the above curriculum areas are covered with objectives written in line with the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) under Physical Development from the EYFS Framework.

Active learning is encouraged across the curriculum in our school. To further enhance our curriculum offer, sport sessions taken by the subject leader take place during Breakfast Club, at lunchtime (alongside child-led activities) and after school.

Impact

Our curriculum ensures that all of our children are physically active and confident in how to be so. This encourages our children to seek out extra-curricular activities in school and further provision outside of school. Our children meet the Chief Medical Officer’s guideline of 30+ minutes of physical activity per day in school. As lessons are taught by the subject leader alongside the class teacher, gaps and misconceptions can be identified quickly and addressed promptly. Teaching is adapted to suit specific needs of children at Windsor and as such, good progress is ensured. The passion for PE at Windsor is evident in the attitudes of our children and they leave for secondary school ready to continue their active lives.
